SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. (KRON) – The Bay Area is getting slammed by windy weather on Wednesday.

According to the National Weather Service, gusts of wind at SFO reached 53 miles per hour.

A Wind Advisory is in effect from 5 p.m. on Wednesday until 5 a.m. on Thursday.

It was issued for the North Bay Mountains, parts of San Francisco, East Bay Hills, Santa Lucia Mountains, Santa Cruz Mountains, Diablo and Gabilan Mountains.

Winds are expected to reach 15 to 25 mph with gusts up to 40 to 50 mph.

Beachgoers had to change their plans thanks to the Wind Advisory.

“We just wanted to go for a bike ride because we thought it was going to be a nice day at the beach but it’s not,” Oisin McClorey said.

The winds were whipping along the coast at Ocean Beach — Even though you can’t see it, you can feel it.

“Mainly the sand because the sand is blowing straight in the face and it kind of hurts,” McClorey said.

The NWS advises residents in those areas to secure any loose objects outdoors.

Be careful as tree limbs could blow down and cause drivers of high profile vehicles or pulling trailers some difficulty.

“You always have the issue with trees falling, lower limbs or broken limbs, especially from burn scars falling this time since we’re associated with the beach, as well, we have to consider things like a swell on top of that,” Brayden Murdock, meteorologist at NWS Bay Area, said.

San Francisco Recreation and Parks closed the stern grove due to the high winds and with these winds, lightweight cars pulling trailers can be difficult to drive over bridges and overpasses.

Even though these high winds did not prompt the National Weather Service to issue a Red Flag Warning.

“Winds are strong enough to spread fires, if there is a fire, pretty quickly. That’s another thing I hope folks are aware of that, oh it’s not a Red Flag Warning, that doesn’t mean you can have a campfire tonight,” Murdock said.
