PG&E shutoffs impact more than a million people in Northern California

SAN FRANCISCO (KRON) – PG&E has completed its second phase of power shutoffs across the Bay Area, with the most recent outages happening late Wednesday.

As of 6:47 p.m. on Saturday, PG&E tweeted that all customers impacted by the shutoffs have now had their power restored.


According to PG&E, the new round of outages impacted around 234,000 customers.

A third phase is being considered for portions of Kern County that would impact around 4,000 customers, but PG&E has not released information on if/when this will happen and which specific areas would be impacted.

When Will It Happen?

PG&E said power shutoffs will happen in three phases.

The first phase of the outages started at midnight Wednesday and impacted about 513,000 customers in the following counties:

The second phase of shutoffs was scheduled to happen around noon Wednesday but was delayed to late Wednesday due to a change in the weather forecast.

The second phase is impacting service to about 234,000 customers in the following counties (click here for a list of cities):

PG&E said a third phase is being considered for portions of Kern County and is expected to impact approximately 4,000 customers.

Specific locations are still to be determined.

When Will Power Be Restored?

PG&E warns it could take several days for the company to restore power once it is turned off.

PG&E anticipates that this weather event will last through midday Thursday, with peak winds forecasted from Wednesday morning through Thursday morning and reaching 40 to 55 mph, with isolated gusts up to 60 to 70 mph.

The region will see peak winds beginning early Wednesday into midday Thursday, the agency said.

The company will also have to inspect power lines after the shutoffs.

Tracking Weather Conditions

PG&E said the decision to turn off power was based on forecasts of dry, hot and windy weather including potential fire risk.

Winds speeds are increasing Thursday morning around the Bay.

By Friday morning, winds should be back to normal.

PG&E said based on the latest weather forecasts and models, PG&E anticipates this weather event will last through midday Thursday, with peak winds forecasted from Wednesday morning through Thursday morning.

A Red Flag Warning has been issued for the North and East Bay Hills and Valleys from 5 a.m. Wednesday until 5 p.m. Thursday.

Red Flag conditions vary across the Bay Area at this time, with the strongest of winds remaining in the hills.

Conditions remain dry Thursday.

Be Prepared

PG&E is currently monitoring weather conditions around the Bay Area including the East Bay and has already started calling customers, warning people that once the power is ready to be turned back on, it could take some time because each power line must be inspected first.

Residents are advised to be prepared for 48 to 72 hours without power.

Some important tips to prepare include having an emergency kit ready that contains flashlights, non-perishable foods, and a portable charger for your cell phone.

Remember to unplug electric appliances and equipment and make sure your food stays cold by keeping your refrigerator and freezer closed.

PG&E is also reminding people who rely on electric or battery-dependent medical tech such as assistive technology, breathing machines, power wheelchairs or scooters and home oxygen or dialysis to have a plan in place for an extended power outage.

Traffic Impacts

CalTrans confirms the Caldecott and Devil’s Slide Tunnels will remain open.

They initially were preparing to close both tunnels when power is off, but PG&E has provided generators to keep the tunnels running.

The Tom Lantos Tunnel along SR-1 in Pacifica will remain open.

Drivers are reminded to treat all non-working intersections and signals as a four-way stop sign.

Public Transit Impacts

BART says its trains will be running on schedule.

The transit agency has been working with PG&E over the past several months to prepare for these outages.

BART has also placed portable generators at select stations to power elevators, escalators, fare gates, and ticket machines.

As of 4:30 a.m. the San Francisco Bay Ferry says it will not be affected by the power outages.

School Closures

Oakland

The Oakland Unified School District announced that all schools, except for nine of them, will hold classes on Thursday.

On Wednesday, the district said 12 schools could be closed on Wednesday but only Skyline ended up being impacted due to its location.

Oakland officials remind residents to sign up for notifications and updates on www.acalert.org during an outage.

Santa Clara County

San Jose Unified School District will remain open despite shutoffs.

San Leandro

All schools in the district and offices will be back open on Thursday, Oct. 10.

Santa Rosa

These schools will be closed Thursday:

All after school programs, including childcare and athletics, were also canceled.

All SRJC campuses and sites will remain closed until the community is otherwise notified. Activities and classes, including online, are canceled.

Solano County

Sonoma County

This list of schools and districts will be closed:

Sonoma State University has announced that the campus will remain closed through Friday. All classes and activities will be canceled.

Other Impacts

USPS Postal Retail and/or Business Mail Entry services may be affected in the following counties:
