Yosemite National Park officials announced on Sunday that the park and surrounding areas will remain closed indefinitely as firefighter continue battling the Ferguson Fire.
Officials said the fire activity in areas adjacent to and in Yosemite National Park poses the danger of rapid expansion.
The following areas remain closed: Yosemite Valley, El Portal Road, Wawona Road, Big Oak Flat Road, Glacier Point, the Mariposa Grove of Giant Sequoias, the Merced Grove of Giant Sequoias, Wawona Campground, Crane Flat Campground, Tamarack Campground, and several other sections of the Park.
As of Monday, it’s been 25 days since the start of the Ferguson Fire. On Sunday it exploded by 8,000 acres.
The blaze has ripped through 91,000 acres and remains at 38% containment.
Crews continue to make progress fighting the blaze.
The Wawona Community is back open for residents only, but fire crews say residents are still under an “evacuation advisory” and should be prepared to evacuate again if the fire grows.
Views from the entrance of @YosemiteNPS – the #FergusonFire has left very little visibility and extremely dangerous air quality. A few #Wawona residents we spoke with said though mandatory evacs have been lifted near their homes they’re still staying away until smoke clears pic.twitter.com/wGyE906ARj— Christina Tetreault (@cetetreault) August 6, 2018
