Yanny vs. Laurel internet debacle solved after teens reveal backstory

Well, guess that’s settled.

The viral audio clip that divided the internet is actually a recording of the word “Laurel,” not “Yanny,” according to the teens behind it all.

In a recent interview with WIRED, Katie Hetzel, a freshman at Flowery Branch High School, said she played the pronunciation clip of the word “Laurel” on vocabulary.com while studying for a literature class.

Hetzel said she heard “Yanny” instead of “Laurel” and told WIRED that she shared the clip with her friends and posted it on Instagram.

Several classmates posted the audio to Instagram and Reddit, and it went viral from there.

Roland Szabo of Georgia was identified by the New York Times as the person who originally uploaded the clip to Reddit.

Szabo told the Times the clip originated from vocabulary.com for the world “Laurel.”

When the clip played on a computer at his school, Szabo said his classmates were on both sides of the pronunciation of the word.

KRON4 posted a poll on Twitter asking whose side people were on, and the results were pretty split, too!

So sorry, Yanny fans. Team Laurel takes the win this time!
