A 7.1 magnitude earthquake strikes the South Pacific near the French territory of New Caledonia, the United States Geological Survey said on Tuesday.
The quake hit at around 8:51 p.m. Pacific Time. The territory is located east of Australia.
The quake had a depth of 26.7 kilometers (16.6 miles).
The quake struck in the ocean, east of New Caledonia.
There is no tsunami threat.
