Woman rescued after getting trapped in sand in Santa Barbara

SANTA BARBARA, Calif. (WTNH) – A 73-year-old woman was rescued after getting trapped waist-deep in the sand.

Santa Barbara firefighters had a really tough time getting her out.

They say surf from Hurricane Fabio pushed water into the mouth of the river and created a quicksand effect. That caused firefighters to also become stuck.

“The firefighters really had to think on their toes and improvise. We ended up using a roof ladder and laid it across the area to give us a little more stability so we could climb in and help the woman out,” stated Rich Griguoli, an engineer with the Santa Barbara Fire Department.

Firefighters used shovels to fill the hole to prevent others from becoming trapped.
