One woman died and anther suffered critical injuries Sunday morning after the minivan they were in went down an embankment along Interstate Highway 580 near Livermore, according to fire officials with the Alameda County Fire Department.
The incident was first reported around 9:45 a.m. in the westbound lanes of the highway east of Greenville Road, California Highway Patrol officials said.
A minivan had somehow fallen about 100 feet down an embankment and reportedly landed on its side, according to Battalion Chief Stephanie Radecke.
One of the victims was pronounced dead at the scene while another was taken to a hospital, Radecke said.
Westbound traffic on Highway 580 has been severely impacted as a result and authorities are asking resident to avoid the area.
