VALLEJO (KRON) — A woman dies Friday morning after being hit in the head with a hammer during a robbery on Wednesday at mall in Fairfield.

Cheryl Ann Sherwood, 63, of Suisun City, was struck from behind in the head with a baseball bat as she walked to her car at the mall around noon. The suspect took her purse and fled, Fairfield police said.

According to a Fairfield lieutenant police, Sherwood died from her injuries Friday morning.

William David King, 19, of Vallejo, was arrested Wednesday around 12:30 p.m. on suspicion of attempted murder and robbery, police said.

King was also wanted by Fairfield police for a similar crime that occurred earlier Wednesday in Fairfield.

Vallejo police officers responded Tuesday at 11:10 a.m. to a robbery at the Wells Fargo Bank located at 1702 Tennessee St.

Witnesses told police they saw a 37-year-old woman walking to her vehicle when the suspect approached the victim and hit her in the head several times with a hammer.

The victim dropped the money she was holding, and the suspect took the money from the ground and fled the area in his car.

The victim suffered major injuries in the attack, police said.

On Wednesday, police located the suspect vehicle and conducted a traffic stop in the 100 block of Fairmont Avenue.

King as detained and confessed to the crime, police said.

Police said evidence was also seized during the investigation.

As King was being processed, Fairfield police notified Vallejo police of the similar crime that occurred in Fairfield earlier that day.

King was subsequently arrested by the Fairfield Police Department on additional counts of suspicion of attempted murder and robbery, police said.

King is scheduled to be arraigned Friday afternoon in Solano County Superior Court.Bay City News Service contributed to this article
