SAN FRANCISCO (KRON)—A San Francisco woman has been charged Thursday for stealing from more than $66,000 from her 90-year-old uncle, according to the San Francisco District Attorney’s Office.

Ramonia Ates, 59, was arrested Tuesday at her uncle’s house where she has been living for several years.

“Taking advantage of the elderly is incredibly cruel and callous,” said District Attorney George Gascón. “Victims of these heartbreaking crimes are often vulnerable and they cannot help themselves, and they are often preyed upon by those depend upon.”

The case was brought to light by Wells Fargo fraud investigators. They reported it to Adult Protective Services after noticing suspicious transactions from the 90-year-old’s accounts.

Adult Protective Services helped the elderly man report the crime to the San Francisco Police Department.

Ates took her uncle’s ATM card that was sent to him in the mail two years ago, according to court documents. Ates is also accused of stealing more than $66,000 from her uncle’s savings and checking accounts.

Ates was arraigned Thursday on charges of stealing from the elderly, identity theft, grand theft by fraud and possession of access card information.

The court issued Ates a restraining order for her to stay away from any Wells Fargo Bank and from contacting her uncle.

Ates is scheduled for a preliminary hearing on Sept. 14.
