SONOMA COUNTY (KRON) — The Sonoma County Sheriff’s Office has arrested a woman accused of setting off brush fires in rural Sonoma County, according to Sgt. S. Crum.
Deputies responded on Tuesday at around 9 p.m. to the area of the 13300 block of Skaggs Springs Road in Geyserville to help Cal Fire with an arson investigation. When they arrived, they found that a Battalion Chief had detained a woman for setting fires in the area, deputies said.
Sheriff’s deputies said a resident saw the woman setting fires along the road, Crum said.
“The property owner stopped her from lighting the current fire and sought her assistance to put it out while he called for help,” Crum said.
The woman, identified as 26-year-old Maria Acevedo of Geyserville, told authorities her boyfriend dropped her off in the area and that she was setting fires so someone would come help her. Deputies said the woman set off about 13 spot fires along the side of that road.
Two acres were burned, Crum said.
Deputies found ammo in Acevedo’s purse, which she is not legally allowed to own because of a felony conviction, according to deputies.
Cal Fire put out the fires, and the woman was arrested for arson, being a felon in possession of ammo, and for an outstanding arrest for a drug-related charge.
Acevedo was booked into the Sonoma County Jail and is being held on $45,000 bail.
