GREEN BAY, Wis. (WBAY) – Two dogs mauled a mother and her 15-month old child Monday in an “unprovoked attack,” according to Green Bay Police.
The owner of the dogs, a neighbor who helped stop the attack, and the grandmother of the toddler spoke out to Action 2 News Monday afternoon at the scene.
The attack happened shortly after noon in the 1100 block of Reber Street. Witnesses tell us the dogs were roaming around prior to the attack.
Police say two neighbors heard the attack and ran out to the street to help.
“I look out my window, I see these pit bulls on these kids, and that’s it, I went out, I attacked the two dogs,” said neighbor Jim Williams. “I just started beating on the dogs and pulling them off, pulling them off, do what I could, when I seen that baby laying there man, it just traumatized me.”
Police arrived at the scene and called in the Humane Officer, who took the dogs to a veterinarian.
The victims were taken to hospitals for treatment of what police said were non-life threatening injuries. Family members tell Action 2 News the child was airlifted to Children’s Hospital in Milwaukee.
“I saw how he looked when he was laying in the bed, and that’s all I got to say, hope and pray to God this doesn’t happen again to nobody else,” said the child’s grandmother Darlisha White.
The victims had no connection to the dogs.
“The dogs were not known to the victims and did not live with them. This was an instance of an unprovoked dog attack that took place outside of the dogs’ yard,” police say.
The dogs were signed over by the owner to be euthanized and tested for rabies.
“I understand how the family feels and how angry they are at me and I have to know my dogs did this and it’s just been a very rough traumatic day,” said Tina Jones, dog owner.
As for possible charges, police say they are still investigating the attack.
