VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (WAVY) – Police say a woman died after wind blew an anchored umbrella into her chest on the Oceanfront Wednesday.
Police have identified the woman as 55-year-old Lottie Michelle Belk, of Chester, Virginia.
According to authorities, dispatchers received an emergency call around 5:07 p.m. for a woman in cardiac arrest on the beach at 33rd Street.
Police say an investigation revealed that a woman – now identified as Belk – was on the beach when a strong gust of wind blew an anchored beach umbrella across the sand, hitting the victim.
When medics arrived, they found the woman suffering from a life-threatening injury. She was transported to a local hospital, but ultimately succumbed to her injury.
Police are investigating the incident. There is no evidence of foul play, according to police.
Wind gusts at the time of the accident were between 20 and 25 mph.
