Watsonville woman fatally struck identified

WATSONVILLE — A 54-year-old woman fatally struck by a car in Watsonville over the weekend has been identified as Leticia Arciga, according to the Santa Cruz County coroner’s office.

At about 4:50 a.m. Saturday, officers responded to a report of a collision between a car and a pedestrian on Main Street near the Crossroads shopping center, police Master Officer Burt Iles said.

The pedestrian, later identified as Arciga, was walking east across Main Street at the shopping center where she was struck by a car heading north, according to Iles.

Emergency crews pronounced Arciga dead at the scene minutes later, Iles said.

Arciga was a Watsonville resident, according to police.

The driver, a 25-year-old San Jose man, did not see Arciga in time to avoid the collision. He stayed at the scene and was cooperative with investigators, according to Iles.

The intersection has traffic signals and streetlights were on at the time of the accident, the officer said.

The roadway was wet because of a combination of mist and fog in the area, which also reduced visibility, according to Iles.

Alcohol or drugs are not believed to be a factor in the collision, Iles said.
