Firefighters battling a fire in an underground Chevron gas vault used a drone to help them assess the blaze.

KRON4’s Will Tran obtained the drone video that helped fire crews with their fight.

Fire officials say it was too unsafe for crews to get near the vault, so they used a drone to get a good look at it.

Crews were able to use the drone thanks to the Pittsburg Police Department, who owns the equipment.

The infrared video shows the fire burning inside of the underground vault.

That’s how firefighters were able to determine how big the fire was and how hot is was.

Thousands of people were evacuated in Bay Point due to the fire that was threatening a natural gas pipeline.

Authorities worried that the gas pipeline could explode forcing around 4,000 people to flee from their homes.
