Virginia kindergartner deemed too young, sent home for a year

HENRICO COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) – A Henrico elementary school sent a kindergartner home this week and told her not to come back for a year.

Amina Durham started at Maude Trevvett Elementary in September, but on Monday her mom got a call saying there was a problem.

Staff at the school told the little girl’s parents they just realized she’s too young for kindergarten.

This is despite the birth certificate Amina’s mom gave the school when she registered her daughter in September.

It turns out the 4-year-old missed the age cutoff by a month.

“She’s been in school for a month now. Couldn’t someone have picked up on this earlier before she gets all into the routine? They said sorry they looked past the mistake and there’s nothing we can do,” explains Amina’s father, Andre Durham.

“I’m just really upset, disappointed. You know my daughter is just happy going to school,” adds Amina’s mom, Tiffany Wallace. “I feel like it just discourages her. She wakes up this morning and is like, mommy why am I not going to school?”

Amina’s parents want the school to find room for their daughter in the Pre-K program, but it’s full.
