OAKLAND (KRON) — The usually mild Steve Kerr lost his cool during the nationally televised NBA Finals Game 1 in Oakland on Thursday night.
Cameras caught this year’s Coach of the Year punching his clipboard and shattering it into pieces. It happened early in the third quarter after the Golden State Warriors’ 14-point lead was cut in half when the Cleveland Cavaliers went on a 7-0 run.
Kerr called a timeout and then pounded the clipboard sending pieces flying onto the Oracle Arena floor.
“Destruction tends to ease some of the anger, so I try to take it out on a clipboard instead of a player. It’s better that way,” Kerr said after the game.
He didn’t say what player caused his frustration, but it could have easily been Cavs player. Cleveland not only cut into the Warriors lead but they found a way to keep the Splash Brothers wading in the shallow end of the scorecard. Stephen Curry and Klay Thompson were a combined 12 points through about 30 minutes of regulation.
But the scoring duo got plenty of support from Shaun Livingston (34 point) and the bench to give the defending champs a Game 1 victory, 104-89.
