CONTRA COSTA COUNTY (KRON) — A wrong-way driver in a stolen car has caused a major traffic backup on Highway 4 near Pittsburg on Thursday afternoon.

A traffic alert has been issued on Highway 4 eastbound at San Marcos. Traffic is backed up to SR-242.

The sheriff’s deputies were chasing a stolen white Cadillac and it appears it ended in a crash.

At around 2:58 p.m., authorities got a call about a stolen car traveling on westbound Highway 4, east of Railroad Avenue.

The car got off the freeway and returned on eastbound Highway 4 and was driving the wrong way.

The car was traveling at speeds up to 90 miles per hour against traffic, the CHP said.

Authorities watched the car from westbound lanes and using a helicopter.

The Cadillac drove until the San Marcos exit, where it hit three cars while driving in the wrong direction.

The car ended up stopping near the San Carlos exit when it hit the center divider, the CHP said.

The suspect got out of the car and tried to carjack another car, but authorities stopped her, according to the CHP.

The suspect driver is female. There was one male passenger, the CHP said.

She could be seen on a stretcher, as emergency crews are transporting her to the hospital.

There is damage to the passenger’s side of the car.
