PITTSBURG (BCN) — A woman who died in a shooting on state Highway 4 in Pittsburg Wednesday was a mother of four who will be remembered for the positive effect she had on people, an official with an organization she was involved with said on Friday.

Shanique Marie, 25, of San Francisco, was one of two people shot in a vehicle on the highway’s westbound side near Railroad Avenue in an incident reported to the California Highway Patrol at 10:47 a.m. Wednesday.

Marie and a male occupant of the vehicle suffered gunshot wounds and injuries from a crash when their vehicle overturned in a dirt embankment.

She later died of a single gunshot wound to the torso, according to the Contra Costa County coroner’s office. The male victim is expected to survive.

Marie’s death came as a shock to the San Francisco Conservation Corps, a nonprofit job readiness and education program she joined. She graduated with a high school diploma from the organization last year while pregnant with three young children.

Antoine Lagarde, a spokesman with the organization, wrote in an email on Friday that he has been receiving texts and phone calls nonstop from the program’s attendees who were “shaken up” by the news.

“She will be greatly missed by all who knew her, (as) she touched many lives in a positive way,” Lagarde wrote. “It’s a tragedy … she will not be able to inspire more of us in the future.”

Lagarde described Marie as being a person open to discussing her life’s struggles, which he said included facing poverty as well as losing her boyfriend and father of her kids in a fatal shooting.

“Yet she would always ask how people were doing and look out for them – even when she was going through depression and turmoil,” Lagarde said.

Lagarde said the people who knew Marie believed that she was not the intended target of the shooting.

“Unfortunately, she was hanging with the wrong crowd,” he added.CHP officials said shortly after the incident that the suspect targeted the victims’ vehicle, but offered no information about a potential motive.

There were also scant details on the potential suspect in this case. CHP officials said only that a newer-model white Mercedes sedan with paper plates was seen fleeing the scene.CHP officials have said the roughly 20 shootings reported on East Bay highways, which have become a trend since November, are suspected to be gang-related.

The latest occurred at about 10:30 p.m. Thursday on Interstate Highway 80 east of Pinole Valley Road in Hercules, when a 25-year-old man was shot by a suspect several times. He survived.

Few of these incidents have resulted in arrests. CHP officials in a Facebook post Friday said that gang shootings are “extremely difficult to investigate, as victims and witnesses are often uncooperative.”

A GoFundMe page has been set up for Marie.
