OAKLAND (KRON) — Golden State Warriors coach Steve Kerr has been named NBA’s Coach of the Year for the 2015-16 season, according to ESPN.
Despite missing the first 43 games of the season, Kerr will still be rewarded for the Warriors’ record-breaking season.
Kerr will be given the award before Game 5 in Oakland Wednesday night against the Houston Rockets in the first round of the Western Conference playoffs.
Kerr got 64 first-place votes from the panel of 130 media members who regularly cover the league. Portland’s Terry Stotts was second in relatively close voting. San Antonio’s Gregg Popovich was third.
Interim head coach Luke Walton took over as head coach for the games Kerr missed due to complications from back surgery.
The Warriors ended the regular season with 73 wins, beating the Chicago Bulls 1995-96 record of 72 wins in one season.
