RICHMOND (KRON/BCN) — A man who died Saturday after a shooting that led to a crash on Interstate Highway 80 in Richmond was identified Monday by the Contra Costa County coroner’s office as 39-year-old Leslie Graham Jr.

At 1:08 a.m. Saturday, the California Highway Patrol received reports of a Jeep crashing on the highway near Hilltop Drive.

Upon arrival, officers found the Jeep in an embankment. The driver, Graham, was ejected from the vehicle and was pronounced dead at the scene, CHP officials said.

CHP officials believe a suspect vehicle drove alongside the Jeep and fired several rounds into it. The vehicle then drifted into the embankment, overturning several times.

Investigators believe the shooter targeted Graham, who was a Richmond resident. The case apparently continues a trend of targeted shootings along Highway 80 in the East Bay in recent months.

This is the second fatality in the string of highway shootings that began on Nov. 2.

Victims have suffered injuries in other incidents, including a 2-year-old injured by broken glass inside a car that was shot at on Jan. 11 on Highway 80 by Richmond Parkway. Much like all the recent shootings between Richmond and Pinole, this latest one happened while it was dark out.

CHP Ofc. Daniel Hill said all of these shootings may be gang-related.

“This last victim had strong ties to north Richmond gangs, that may be the case. What we can tell with relative certainty is that each of these incidents was a targeted incident. We believe that people known to these victims were targeted specifically. They were not random acts,” Hill said.

Hill said there are extra patrols in the area to help put a stop to these shootings.
