BERKELEY (KRON) — Yet another case of sexual misconduct is being investigated at the UC Berkeley campus.
The latest allegation deals with a sexual assault of a female athlete, and how a coach reportedly failed to follow the rules and report it.
This comes on the heels of several other recent high profile cases.
At the men’s rowing team training facility, no one would talk to KRON about this allegation that the men’s lead crew coach failed to speak up in a timely matter about a sexual allegation.
The case dates back several years ago. UC Berkeley officials will not elaborate on the details involving the female student, but there are reports that the student reportedly told her coach that she was assaulted by a fellow crew member.
She claims the coach did not report it immediately, which is in violation of school policy.
UC Berkeley officials issued a statement saying, “The UC Office of the President is in the process of hiring an outside investigator to determine if an allegation of sexual assault has merit. Coaches have a responsibility to report any form of alleged assault or harassment immediately so they can be investigated.”
The nationally acclaimed university is facing a lot of negative publicity of late. Recently, the former men’s assistant basketball coach, Yann Huffnagel, was found to have violated the university’s sexual harassment policy.
The dean of the law school resigned earlier in the year after a former administrative assistant filed a civil claim against him for sexual harassment.
And then, two others, including an astronomy professor, also resigned for similar allegations.
This case, involving this crew member, reportedly took place in 2013. KRON reached out to other crew members on the team at the time of the allegation, but no one has returned our calls yet.
The coach at the center of the controversy is Mike Teti. And late Friday afternoon, KRON heard from the coach via email.
He referred the case to the athletic director and added that, “The allegations are false. I am confident the investigation will prove they have no merit.”
He says his attention is on the athletes, especially the seniors who will be graduating.
