SAN MATEO (KRON) — Police arrested two people and shut down a suspected brothel Monday afternoon in San Mateo, according to police.

Police served a search warrant at a house in the 400 block of West 20th Avenue, across the street from Junipero Serra High School.

San Francisco residents Jin Xiang Zhen, 25, and Ruibiao Li, 27, were both arrested at the house, police said.

San Mateo police began their investigation after they received several complaints about the suspected brothel.

The San Mateo Police Crime Reduction Unit worked undercover and developed evidence that led officers to believe that prostitution acts were occurring at the residence.

Zhen was arrested for Operating a House of Ill Fame and Li was arrested for Possession of a Controlled Substance. They were both booked into San Mateo County jail.

Serra High School President Lars Lund released a statement after hearing about the case.

“We were surprised and dismayed to hear that this happened in the neighborhood near our school. We commend the San Mateo Police Department for its swift response, and thank our local police officers for protecting our San Mateo neighborhood,” Lund said in a statement.

The investigation is ongoing, police said.
