OAKLAND (KRON) — A suspect was arrested early Thursday morning in Stockton for allegedly shooting at a police sergeant in Oakland last Saturday, police said.
The man, whose name has not yet been released, was arrested in Stockton around 4 a.m. after a standoff, according to Oakland police.
The man barricaded himself inside a house. After negotiations, police were able to arrest him.
After his arrest, investigators served a search warrant at the home and found a firearm consistent with the one used in the shooting Saturday, Holmgren said.
The police sergeant was shot at around 9:30 p.m. on Saturday. She was responding to a call at when she crashed her patrol car in the 1900 block of 73rd Avenue, according to police.
Shortly afterward, a man approached the patrol vehicle and fired a round, striking the patrol car, police said.
The sergeant wasn’t struck by the bullet but was taken to a hospital to be treated for injuries she suffered in the crash. She has since been released but has not returned to work while she continues to recover, according to Holmgren.
Holmgren identified the injured sergeant as N. Clark. The Oakland police roster shows a Sgt. Nadia Clark is employed by the department.
Holmgren said investigators are looking into the motive for the shooting and said it might have to do with anti-police sentiment in some pockets of the country following multiple police shootings in recent weeks of black men, some of which were filmed by witnesses.
Multiple officers were shot and killed in Dallas on July 7 and then again 10 days later in Baton Rouge, Louisiana.
“We don’t know the why” of Saturday’s shooting, Holmgren said, but he added that the suspect “made some statements that make me believe he’s part of that story.”Bay City News Service contributed to this report
