HAYWARD (KRON) — The San Mateo Bridge is open Friday morning after being shut down late Thursday night due to a five-car crash involving a stolen Hayward police patrol vehicle.

All westbound lanes of the San Mateo Bridge were closed in Hayward. A Sig-Alert was issued for the crash, which occurred just east of the toll plaza.
At 9:23 p.m., Hayward police and fire responded to an injury collision on Oaks Drive behind Cal State East Bay at Oaks and Rocksbury, authorities said. The crash involved a Hayward police patrol car, according to officials.
One of the occupants of one of the vehicles was being treated by Hayward fire when he jumped up, ran off, and ran into a Hayward Police patrol car and sped away.
A pursuit initiated and the stolen patrol car struck three other vehicles and rolled over down into the marsh ravine.
Around 9:45 p.m., officers spotted the vehicle on westbound 92 at 880.
The suspect, identified as 28-year-old Jeffery Chambers from Hayward, was taken into custody without further incident and was transported to a local hospital for medical treatment.
Chambers was later medically cleared sustaining only minor injuries.
Chambers were booked at the Hayward City Jail on the charges of motor vehicle theft, evading, theft, non-injury hit and run vehicle collision and injury hit and run vehicle collision. He is scheduled to appear in court on Friday.
No Hayward officers were involved in the collision itself.
The crash involved five cars, including an overturned vehicle. Only minor injuries have been reported.
