SAN FRANCISCO (KRON) — Physicians agree that good eating habits are something that should start at an early age.

But still, some people become obese while they are still children. But now, a new study finds a child’s health can dramatically improve simply by cutting out one type of food.

Researchers at UCSF and Touro University put 43 obese kids on a diet for nine days. They didn’t cut calories or carbs.

Instead, they substituted carbs like rice bread or pasta in place of the sugar, specifically juices and sodas. And the results were dramatic.

“Cutting sugar for nine or 10 days makes you much better in terms of fat, bad cholesterol, blood sugar, your blood pressure, and its surprising it happened so fast,” Touro University Dr. Alejandro Gugliucci said.

Researchers said cutting out those drinks, as well as sugary cookies and candies, can go a long way to prevent high blood pressure, heart disease, and diabetes..

“The big deal is it is such a short time and such a big effect without the need of a weight loss,” Touro University Dr. Jean-Marc Shwarz said.

While fruit juice is out, fruit itself is a fine substitution.
