VIDEO: Southern California teen nearly falls into sinkhole

LAKE ELSINORE, California (KRON) — It is something you never think will happen to you.

On Monday, a Southern California teen had the scare of her life.

Thirteen-year-old Macayla Wittman was walking in her front yard when the ground gave way beneath her. You can just make it out on the surveillance video.

She nearly fell down a sinkhole. Luckily, Wittman was able to catch herself on the side of the hole.

She says she swung her legs up and pulled herself out of the sinkhole.

The hole is more than 20 feet deep.

“I was talking to my mom on the phone. I was walking down the yard, and then all of a sudden, I just like stood there. And then I just like fell,” Wittman said.

The family thinks the hole may have been dug decades ago as part of a septic system.

Macayla’s mother says she was not told about the hole upon purchasing the house.
