VIDEO: Southern California officer shot in badge, suspect dies in fiery crash

HUNTINGTON BEACH (KRON) — A man who shot an officer in Huntington beach and then led police on a high-speed chase died in a fiery car crash Friday morning.

Video shows the car on fire soon after the crash.

The incident began as a domestic violence call in the middle of the night but soon turned into a high-speed chase when officers arrived on scene.

Police tried to make contact with the man, but he jumped in his car and drove off.

At one point, he fired several rounds at officers. One of them got hit, but the bullet struck him directly in the badge.

“Cause if it struck anywhere else outside the vest it could have been tragic, We could have lost an officer,” police spokeswoman Jennifer Marlott said.

He is expected to be OK.

The driver led authorities on a high-speed chase before losing control and crashing.
