SAN JOSE (KRON) — You could say San Jose is worried that California might legalize recreational marijuana as the city has voted to ban pot sales ahead of the election on Tuesday, November 8.
San Jose is California’s third-largest city by population. San Jose City Council members said they passed the temporary ban to give city officials time to develop regulations for sales and farming.
San Jose is not alone in scrambling to block the possible effects of Proposition 64, which also allows cities to enact local bans on marijuana sales.
Dozens of cities and counties from tiny Blue Lake in the heart of Northern California’s pot-growing mecca to National City near the Mexico border have either imposed or are contemplating tough restrictions on recreational marijuana sales and cultivation.
Local governments cannot prohibit people 21-years-old and older from having up to six marijuana plants for personal use and possessing up to an ounce of pot.Associated Press contributed to this report.
