SAN FRANCISCO (KRON)—The rain didn’t keep the crowds from going to Pier 39 for their annual tree lighting ceremony.

KRON4’s Lydia Pantazes was there.

It was much more than the tree lighting here at Pier 39.

There was everything from Christmas carolers to people writing letters to Santa and of course the tree.

It did start raining toward the end of the ceremony, but that didn’t seem to dampen anyone’s spirits.

The majestic 60-foot Christmas tree stands at the entrance to the pier.

The tree lighting ceremony started out with several live musical performances including stars from Disney’s The Lion King.

Then, the performers gathered on stage for a countdown to the tree lighting which took place after 6:30 p.m.

We talked to some first time visitors about the tree.

“I think its beautiful, I’ve never seen a tree lighting before,” one woman said.

“I always come here to pier 39 but I’ve never seen the tree lighting,” one Bay Area resident said.

Other entertainment included a mariachi band and there was also a place to send letters to Santa.

We don’t know exactly how many people showed up for the tree lighting, but it was definitely packed.
