SAN CARLOS (KRON) — An RV was on fire on Northbound 101 before Holly Street, and traffic was backed up to Marsh Road.
Two people and a dog escaped from the fire.
Drivers experienced delays of 55 minutes, as traffic was at a standstill. Hwy 101 was closed in both directions between Whipple and Holly.
All southbound and northbound lanes have now reopened.
Both northbound and southbound directions had been shut down. The fire started at around 4:34 p.m., the CHP said.
Drivers are being asked to avoid the area and take Interstate 280 instead.
Firefighters have water on the fire and are maintaining a 300-foot distance from the blaze.
A Sig-alert was issued around 5:15 p.m., and crews are diverting traffic. The RV was coming back from a hobby rocket show and was carrying four rockets, firefighters said.
The people inside the car have been identified as an Oregon couple.
“It appears the couple had been traveling northbound on US-101 south of Holly Street as they were returning home from a model rocket show in Las Vegas, Nevada when they noticed smoke inside the RV. The driver stopped on the gore point (the area between the US-101 NB #4 lane and the Holly Street off ramp) and exited the RV and moved to safety as the RV became fully engulfed,” the CHP said in a press release.
The exact cause of the fire is still being investigated.
