ALBUQUERQUE, New Mexico (KRON) — Shocking police video has been released in Albuquerque, New Mexico showing how an officer mistakenly opened fire on a colleague.
The officer who made the terrible mistake is Lt. Greg Brachle. He thought he was shooting a suspect in a drug bust but it was actually an undercover detective.
The video is hard to watch. It includes the moment when Brachle realized he had shot a friend and fellow officer.
This happened last year but the video has just been released. Despite being shot nine times , the undercover detective actually survived.
All of his major organs were injured and he has undergone many surgeries.
The City of Albuquerque has just given him a $6.5 million settlement. As for Brachle, he resigned before he could be fired.
An investigation showed he made a string of clumsy mistakes, including the fact he hadn’t attended a briefing on the drug bust–and simply showed up.
