OAKLAND (KRON) — A person at Skyline High School in Oakland has been diagnosed with active tuberculosis, according to Oakland Unified School District spokesman John Sasaki.

The Alameda County Public Health Department recently informed the district about the TB case, Sasaki said. No other information has been release about the case.

A person with active TB can spread germs through the air, health officials said.

“High school and District staff are working closely with the Alameda County Public Health Department to further investigate the TB case and identify anyone who may have been exposed,” Sasaki said in a press release.

What is TB? How it spreads and risk factors

Those possibly exposed will be offered a free TB test, Sasaki said.

“The most common way to become infected with TB is by spending significant amounts of time in close contact with a person who has active TB, such as living in the same space, studying or working together, or sitting near that person in a classroom or office,” Sasaki said. “TB is rarely spread to persons who spends short amounts of time with someone with active TB.”

TB is a preventable and curable disease, Sasaki said.

“The health and welfare of our students is our primary concern. We are committed to taking every precaution to protect the health of students enrolled in OUSD.” Sasaki said.

The district is holding a parent information meeting Monday night in the school auditorium.
