PITTSBURG (KRON) — A pedestrian was killed Tuesday morning after being hit by a speeding car fleeing from police in Pittsburg, according to police.
The incident began around 7:45 a.m. when a Pittsburg police officer attempted to stop a speeding car going eastbound on West Leland Road, police said.
The driver sped up when the officer tried to pull him over. The officer called off the chase when the motorist began driving erratically.
The driver then struck a pedestrian before crashing through the fence at Delta View Golf Course in the area of West Leland and Golf Club roads.
The man, who has not been identified, was pronounced dead at the scene.
The suspect vehicle, which had just one occupant, continued onto the golf course before the male driver abandoned the vehicle, police said.
Officers later located the suspect on Dover Way, several blocks from the scene of the collision. Police said he is in custody and is being interviewed by investigators.
Police have identified the alleged motorist who fatally struck the woman while fleeing officers as a 26-year-old man who was on probation for a prior driving under the influence conviction.
Aroldo Vela-Chavez, of Concord, was identified as the suspect arrested for allegedly hitting and killing a 65-year-old Pittsburg woman with his vehicle before he drove onto a golf course.
Pittsburg police Capt. Ron Raman said Vela-Chavez was driving on a suspended license for a prior DUI arrest. He was arrested Tuesday on suspicion of murder, vehicular manslaughter and evasion, Raman said.
Raman said whether drugs or alcohol were a factor in this incident has yet to be determined.
