A Los Angeles family says their brand new car suddenly burst into flames while parked in front of their house.

They contacted both the dealership and the corporate offices for BMW but say they’re not satisfied with the answers they’re getting.

“I go outside and the front of the hood is completely engulfed in flames,” car owner Knut Grevle said. “I was a complete shock.”

Grevle watched in disbelief as his new BMW X3 went up in flames. He says he pulled up in front of his Westchester home around 3:20 p.m. Monday.

Fifteen minutes later, he got a knock on his door.

“My neighbor came running up to the house and said my car was on fire,” Grevle said. “I ran to the window, looked out the window, and I saw, you know, 30, 40-foot flames. And then not only that, a huge tornado of black smoke coming off of it and I freaked out. I’ve never been so scared.”

They called 911 and as they frantically waited for help, their front gate and grass caught on fire.

“At that point, I didn’t know what to think,” Grevle said. “I kept going back in my mind, ‘This car’s 9 months old. 9 months.'”

Firefighters got there in time to prevent the flames from spreading to their house.

But when they left, the car caught on fire again and they had to come back.

“Literally, our house could have burned down,” Grevle’s wife Jennifer said. “My husband could have died. I could have been a single mom. Or worse, all of us could have died.”

Knut bought the car in January from Beverley Hills BMW where he’s been a customer for 15 years.

He says when he told them about the fire, they told him to call his insurance company.

And when he finally got a hold of BMW corporate, they offered a rental car and an investigation.

“I don’t want this happening to somebody else,” Jennifer said. “I mean, if there was a baby in the car, you wouldn’t be able to pull the kid out of the car seat fast enough.”

“The what ifs just started circulating and…what could have happened if I would’ve been in that car on the 405 or if I had been sitting in my car taking a phone call?” Knut added. “It’s just mind-boggling. We’re still in shock. There’s something off here. And we do want answers.”

The car was not part of any recall.
