PACIFICA (KRON) — The U.S. Coast Guard staged a water rescue near the Pacifica Pier after a couple was swept off the beach into the ocean Tuesday afternoon.
It is not known how the woman was rescued, but the Coast Guard confirms she was transported to a hospital. Her condition is not known at this time.
Earlier reports said the couple had tripped and fell into the ocean but the Coast Guard confirmed they were actually swept off the beach.
The incident happened at around 2 p.m., according to Coast Guard Lt. Marcia Medina.
A male victim was rescued by a Coast Guard helicopter crew around 3:15 p.m. But the San Mateo County Coroner’s Office confirmed Tuesday night that the man died.
He has been identified as 60-year-old Larry Moore of Pacifica. The cause of his death is still being investigated.
Moore reportedly tried to save his wife, who was hit by the wave and adrift in the ocean on Tuesday afternoon.
Moore and his wife previously lived at the Pacifica Skies Estates, an RV Park currently in a battle with the city. Residents said he was one of the main voices fighting evictions.
