UPDATE: OAKLAND (BCN) — Oakland Mayor Libby Schaaf said she is “actively” making sure proper protocols were in place when an Oakland police officer fatally shot a suspect found sleeping with a handgun in his car this morning.

In a statement released by her office today, Schaaf said all uses of force are taken seriously and should be closely examined “for the safety and assurance of the public and law enforcement.”

“I am actively making sure that the protocols and supervision we’ve worked hard to put in place as part of our police reforms are being followed rigorously as this shooting is thoroughly investigated,” Schaaf said. “Our community deserves all of the accurate and timely information that can be provided.”

Police said officers found a loaded gun with an attached illegal extended magazine and said the car had been used in a burglary that occurred last night in San Francisco.

San Francisco police confirmed the car was used in a burglary reported around 8 p.m. at the Lands End visitor’s center. The vehicle fled from police.

The case is being handled by the U.S. Park Police, according to San Francisco police.

The Alameda County District Attorney’s Office is investigating the shooting, per the department’s policy, along with the Oakland Police Department’s homicide unit and its internal affairs division.

UPDATE: OAKLAND (BCN) — A suspect found sleeping in a car with a handgun was shot and killed by police officers in Oakland this morning, according to Chief Sean Whent.

Police were notified of an armed man sleeping in a vehicle off the Lakeshore off-ramp from Interstate Highway 580 around 7:30 a.m. today, according to Whent.

Officers blocked off the area and spent roughly an hour trying to wake the suspect, at one point breaking out the car windows.

“Upon the last attempt to do that officers approached the car, and of course at that point the person was awake,” Whent said. “A confrontation ensued.”

One officer deployed a Taser, another officer deployed a firearm, and the suspect was struck by gunfire.

The suspect was transported to Highland Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

This morning’s shooting is under investigation by the District Attorney’s office. There were 12 officers on scene who are being interviewed, and investigators are reviewing the footage from their bodyworn cameras.

“At this point we can’t really say what specifically happened in the car until those interviews are done,” Whent said.

According to Whent, the Oakland Police Department’s last fatal officer-involved shooting was in May 2013.

OAKLAND (BCN/KRON) —Police are investigating an officer-involved shooting that occurred in Oakland this morning.

The incident began at 7:27 a.m. in the vicinity of Lakeshore and Lake Park avenues.

The crime scene has been cordoned off, according to police.

A spokesperson for the Oakland Police Department was en-route to the scene of the shooting as of 9:35 a.m.

At 11:45 a.m KRON 4 contacted Oakland Police Department for an update, but no other information has been released.

KRON 4 spoke with Earl McDaniel who is the manager on call at the CVS Pharmacy store located on Lakeshore Avenue.

McDaniel says he found out about the incident when cashiers called him from outside the store because police would not let them inside.

Eventually police let in the employees. “We’re missing out on business.” McDaniel said. McDaniel mentioned that the area is still taped off and no customers have been able to come into the store.

KRON 4 also contacted other businesses in the area such as Chase and 76 Gas Station but were unable to get hold of anyone.
