SAN LEANDRO (KRON) — Alameda County fire officials are investigating a deadly collision between an Amtrak train and a vehicle in the East Bay this afternoon, Alameda County fire officials said.

The fire department first alerted the public about the incident in a tweet at 1:58 p.m. that the collision occurred on the railroad tracks in the area of Washington Avenue and Halcyon Drive.

Firefighters responded at 1:19 p.m. to reports that a woman and child had been killed in a collision, fire spokeswoman Aisha Knowles said.

Amtrak spokeswoman Vernae Graham said the train involved was Capitol Corridor Train No. 532 that was headed from San Jose to the Sacramento area.

There were no reported injuries to the 39 passengers and crew members. A bus bridge has been established, she said.

It is unknown how fast the train was travelling at the time of the collision but trains reach speeds of about 79 mph, according to Graham.

The vehicle was stuck in heavy traffic going north on Washington Avenue near Chapman Road. This is a four-lane road where the train tracks cross the road at an angle ,and it is unknown if the driver saw the train coming, Lt. Robert McManus said.

The vehicle was struck on the passenger side. It became stuck under the front end of the train and was pushed about a quarter mile, McManus said.

There were undercover police officers in the area who responded to the accident and attempted to care for the two who died but were unsuccessful.

They were both pronounced deceased on scene by the Alameda coroner, McManus said.

The two killed are 30-year-old Vanessa Marisol Henriquez and 3-year-old Saidy Nohemy Henriquez, the husband of Vanessa confirms to KRON4. Saidy is the daughter of Vanessa.

“We offer our condolences to the family and friends of those that lost their loved ones this afternoon,” Lt. Robert McManus said. “This is tragic. There are absolutely no other words to describe it.”

San Leandro police are looking for any security footage or eye witnesses to learn why this incident occurred. They do not know if Amtrak has its own security cameras, police said.

“During the early stages of the investigation, police learned that the Toyota, driven by Vanessa Henriquez had been travelling south on Washington Ave. and was stopped in traffic between other vehicles and the railroad crossing arms when the collision occurred,” police said in a press release.

Police said they believe all safety measures were taken.
