OAKLEY (BCN) — Students and faculty at an Oakley middle school are grieving the death of a 14-year-old student who died after a collision on his bicycle Sunday evening, school officials said.
Kaleb Vancil was described as a “popular and likeable” eighth grader at Delta Vista Middle School, according to school principal Harvey Yurkovich.
Vancil was hospitalized Sunday after a car struck him while he was riding his bicycle near Big Break Road and Vintage Parkway around 8:15 p.m., city officials said.
He was airlifted to UCSF Benioff Children’s Hospital Oakland, where he died the next morning, according to city officials.
Yurkovich said the school is offering counseling for groups as well as individuals coping with the loss.
“We’ve had a great response and support from the district office as well as neighboring district offices,” Yurkovich said.
The school has been in contact with Vancil’s family and is working to support a younger sibling of Vancil who is also a student within the Oakley Union Elementary School District, according to Yurkovich.
