MENLO PARK (KRON) — The Menlo Park fire department joined forces with PG&E to conduct their annual holiday fire safety demonstration.

Hundreds attended the free event located at the Baylands Structural Collapse Center near Bayfront Expressway.

Onlookers were treated to live fire simulations addressing the accidental ignition of Christmas trees.

Fire officials encouraged people to keep their trees healthy and hydrated in case of an emergency.

Authorities say the purpose of the demonstration is to promote fire and life safety during the holidays.

Last week, firefighters responded to a fire caused by an unattended stove, firefighters said. The blaze displaced a family of two and caused over $85,000 in damage to an apartment complex.

Firefighters said they have experienced deadly fires on both Christmas Eve and morning in the past.
