Video: Mayor says Orinda may need regulations on short-term home rentals after man badly hurt in house party

ORINDA (KRON) — The mayor of Orinda said the city may need some regulations when it comes to short-term home rentals.

This follows a party this past weekend at a rental home that left one man in the hospital with critical injuries.

When Joe Gordon arrived home late Friday night, there was a party going on at his neighbor’s house, and he said people were spilling out of the neighbor’s Camino Encinas home into the street and into a nearby parking lot.

“We were talking about it and said it’s a little dicey, a little late, a little off, but…nobody throwing bottles, nobody drinking in the street, nothing extreme enough to bother a neighbor and call in the police,” Gordon said.

But it turns out it wasn’t the neighbor who was holding the party. The house had been rented out, and a few hours later, just before 2 a.m., that party took a nasty turn.

“Police got a call for a report of a man down, someone injured, in a parking lot adjacent to a residential property,” police Chf. Mark Nagel said.

Police say a 21-year-old man who most recently lived in Florida was involved in a fight in a parking lot across the street from the party house.

“There were serious injuries, life-threatening injuries to the victim, so officers…began an investigation into who was responsible…,” Nagel said.

Police have now released the photo of the man they believe was responsible for the attack. They are asking for the public’s help to identify him.

Neighbors are shocked by the turn of events and said this is not common on their street or in their city.

“It’s so out of the ordinary….I would say this is more of a fluke that happened,” Gordon said.
