SAN JOSE (KRON) — Crews are battling a fast-moving brush fire in the Santa Cruz mountains that broke out Monday afternoon.

As of Wednesday, the blaze has burned up to 2,250 acres and is 10 percent contained, according to Cal Fire.

One structure has been destroyed and another was damaged in the fire. Fire officials say another 300 structures are threatened.

The Loma Fire was reported around 2:50 p.m. Monday in the area of Loma Prieta and Loma Chiquita roads off of Summit Road. As of 4:47 p.m. Monday, one structure has been destroyed.

It has spread to the Mount Loma Prieta, Mount Chual and Uvas Creek drainages, Cal Fire officials said.

The fire is reportedly burning in steep, inaccessible terrain covered in dry, drought-stressed fuels.

More than 800 firefighters are working to extinguish the blaze with assistance from helicopter, bulldozer and water tender crews, according to Cal Fire.

No injuries have been reported.

All evacuations have been lifted in Santa Cruz County.

Vehicle traffic in the previously evacuated areas will be limited due to a high number of emergency vehicles on the roadway. It is advised that residents limit travel on the roadway in an effort to reduce gridlock.

California Highway Patrol may restrict access to non-residents at checkpoints.

There are three evacuation centers for residents in the area.

  • Jewish Community Center of Silicon Valley, 14855 Oka Road, Los Gatos
  • Santa Cruz County Fairgrounds’ Grange Hall at 2601 East Lake Avenue in Watsonville
  • Morgan Hill Presbyterian Church, 16970 Dewitt Ave., Morgan Hill

Those impacted by the Loma Fire can go to the evacuation centers to find water, food, information, emotional support, small animal care and shelter if necessary, officials said.

Closures are also in effect at Mount Bache and Loma Prieta roads, Mount Bache and Highland Way and Mount Madonna and Pole Line roads, sheriff’s officials said.Stay with KRON4 News for the latest developments on this breaking story.
