SAN FRANCISCO (KRON) — Neighbors are on high alert, as the man who violently beat a woman near a popular park is still on the loose Thursday night.

And people are worried that he could strike again.

The assault happened back in August near San Francisco’s Lafayette Park.

Police have released surveillance video of the attack and a sketch of the suspect, but so far, they do not have anyone in custody.

It has been several weeks since the attack, and the suspect has not been seen in the neighborhood since then. But neighbors do not want to see this happen again, and they are trying to be proactive.

Surveillance video near Lafayette Park in Pacific Heights at around 7:45 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 20 shows the attack. Out of nowhere, a man wearing a sweatshirt attacks a woman who was apparently just out of a walk.

He brutally beats her. The victim, who suffered a broken nose, has said she does not know the man, had never spoken with him before, and has no idea why he assaulted her.

A few days later, San Francisco police released a sketch of the suspect. After seeing the video and the sketch, another woman came forward to claim that the same man may have also been following her hours before the attack.

Weeks later, neighbors are still shocked by the brutality of this assault. Marjorie Fulbright lives near Lafayette Park.

She said she can’t stop looking over her shoulder.

“We are constantly in a defensive mode, changing directions at the park, crossing a street,” Fulbright said. “We are scared.”

On Thursday evening, around 100 people attended a community safety meeting not far from the park. The attack was the main topic.

San Francisco police say they have a pair of investigators working on the case and that they continue to follow up on leads and tips from the public.

Fulbright said she believes that the police are doing all they can, but she worries that this attack is a symptom of a larger problem–that her neighborhood is not as safe as it used to be.

“A few years ago, we would walk down the street and have coffee and just chat, and not feel afraid of anything, and now, we have to look every minute where we are going,” Fulbright said.

The suspect is described as being in his 40s or 50s, with dirty blond hair and a mole on his right cheek.

Anyone with information is asked to contact the San Francisco Police Department.
