CONCORD (KRON) – James Jarrard, the man wanted for shooting an 8-year-old Concord boy, is in critical condition Monday after suffering injuries during an officer-involved shooting in Fairfield, according to KRON4 News sources.
The incident happened in the parking lot of the Lowe’s Home Improvement hardware store located in the 3400 block of North Texas, according to KRON4 News sources.
According to sources, Jarrard was transported to a local trauma center and is in critical condition.
Jarrard, who had been suspected of gunning down the boy in a drive-by shooting in North Concord, had been evading police all weekend.
The shooting happened Friday night at around 5 p.m. Police officers in Concord responded to the 2900 block of La Salle Avenue on reports of shots fired.
“There were some children that he was playing with and also someone else present, it’s unknown if the shooter targeted the child or an adult,” Cpl. Christopher Blakeley said. “Our major crimes unit is on scene and they’re interviewing family members to see if this was random or targeted.”
Family members transported the boy to the John Muir Medical Center while officers were en route to the incident.
Officers learned that the victim is suffering from a single life-threatening wound to his neck. The boy was then transferred to Children’s Hospital in Oakland is in stable condition as of Saturday morning.
The boy is now recovering from surgery and expected to survive, according to police.
The boy’s mother, Sarah Barela, had a message for the person who led police to Jarrard on Monday.
“Thank you so, so much,” Barela said. “This has been a nightmare. It’s been restless nights. I haven’t had very much sleep. It’s been rough. It’s been really rough, and thanks to you, the Concord Police Department, and Fairfield (Police) Department, we got him. My son can sleep tonight. I can sleep tonight, and you put a smile on my son’s face for the first time since Friday.”
The Concord Police Department’s Major Crime units investigating the shooting identified Jarrard as the suspect in this incident. A $1.1 million warrant was issued for his arrest.
Officers don’t believe the shooting was gang-related.
Jarrard is being described as a white male around 6’1, weighing 170 pounds with a shaved head and green eyes. He has tattoos, including one on his neck. He is on parole for burglary.
Police considered Jarrard armed and dangerous.
