UPDATE 5:17 P.M.:
The Richmond-San Rafael Bridge is now open.
The CHP is escorting the first vehicles through.
Expect residual traffic
“It’s a lot to deal with,” CHP spokesman Officer Andrew Barclay said. “We’re literally trying to scrape a melted vehicle off the roadway.”
The big-rig was hauling 24 tons of contaminated soil from a Marin County construction site, but the soil didn’t spill onto the bridge and none of the roughly 75 gallons of fuel spilled into the bay, Barclay said.
Traffic continues to be nightmarish in the area, with drivers being funneled onto city streets near San Quentin State Prison and throughout San Rafael, according to Barclay.UPDATE:
The eastbound lanes are expected to open at 6 p.m.

Drivers are being advised to avoid the Richmond-San Rafael Bridge Tuesday morning due to a big rig fire, according to the California Highway Patrol.
All lanes of eastbound Interstate 580 are closed due to the collision. All westbound lanes are still open.
Just after 8 a.m., the big rig struck a guard rail and caught fire.
The fire has been extinguished, according to a Marin CHP Officer. Crews are working to clear the bridge.
CHP is advising drivers to avoid the bridge and use alternative routes.
CHP estimates that the lanes will reopen by 1:30 p.m.
The truck is filled with contaminated dirt from a San Rafael PG&E site. Crews say there are no health risks from the dirt but the cleanup is extensive.
No other vehicles were involved and no injuries were reported.Stay with KRON4 News for updates
