SANTA CRUZ COUNTY (KRON) — The Loma Fire burning in the Santa Cruz Mountains continues to grow Thursday morning.
The wildfire that began Monday afternoon has now burned 4,300 acres and is 34 percent contained, according to Cal Fire. It sparked near Loma Prieta and Loma Chiquita roads in southern Santa Clara County.
Eight homes were destroyed, along with nine other structures. 325 structures are still threatened as of Thursday morning.
One home is damaged, Cal Fire said.
One firefighter was hurt and taken to the hospital.
No word on his or her condition.
Evacuation orders were lifted Wednesday afternoon for Santa Cruz County residents.
Some areas of Santa Clara County are still under mandatory evacuation orders: the Loma Prieta ridgeline area including all tributary roads along Summit Road from Soquel San Jose Road to Ormsby Fire Station. This includes Uvas Canyon County Park, Loma Chiquita, Casa Loma, and Loma Prieta Way. Portions of Croy Road are under an evacuation warning.
Evacuation centers:
- Santa Cruz County Fairgrounds at 2601 East Lake Ave. in Watsonville (people can bring large animals)
- Jewish Community Center of Silicon Valley at 14855 Oka Road in Los Gatos
- Morgan Hill Presbyterian Church at 16970 De Witt Ave. in Morgan Hill.
Traffic has been blocked on multiple roadways including Loma Chiquita Road, Mount Madonna Road at Ormsby Road and Summit Road between Soquel San Jose Road and Pole Line Road, according to Cal Fire.
1,700 firefighters are currently attacking the fire.
The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
