CONTRA COSTA COUNTY (KRON) — A judge has ordered a former Contra Costa County deputy to stand trial in the Oakland police sex scandal case, according to KRON4 Haaziq Madyun.

Ricardo Perez, 29, has been charged with one felony count of oral copulation with a minor and two misdemeanor counts of committing a lewd act in public.

The Oakland City Council voted in late May to pay Jasmine Abuslin, formerly known as Celeste Guap, $989,000. She was at the center of the scandal.

Abuslin was the only witness who testified during the pretrial hearing in Dublin on Thursday.

Jasmine claimed that she was victimized and exploited by Oakland police officers when she was under age.

The investigation led Oakland to go through three police chiefs.

The sexual nature of the alleged crimes led to rather graphic details during direct and cross examination.

Abuslin was only 17 at the time of an encounter with Perez in July 2015.

She admitted under cross-examination from Perez’s attorney that she lied about her age and told the former deputy that she was married with multiple children.

But Alameda County prosecutor Sabrina Farrell said during arguments at the end of the hearing that it was unreasonable for Perez to believe that, based on his interactions with her.

“His only focus was on what she could do for him sexually,” Farrell said.

Perez, who remains free from jail on his own recognizance, will return to court on Aug. 10.

He is one of several law enforcement officers, including many from the Oakland Police Department, who have been charged in connection with the sex misconduct scandal.
