VALLEJO (KRON) — An infant has died in an apartment in Vallejo late Wednesday night, according to an official with the Vallejo Fire Department.
The three-alarm structure fire broke out around 11:30 p.m. at the 120 block of Kathy Ellen Drive, authorities said.
The fire department initially reported crews were responding to a fully involved structure fire with a child possibly trapped inside the structure.
When firefighters arrived, they found an apartment on the second story was fully engulfed in flames and the fire was beginning to spread to a neighboring unit.
Crews were able to get the fire under control by 1:20 a.m. Thursday morning.
Firefighters then conducted a primary search. During the search, they located the infant’s body.
13 residents were displaced due to the fire. Red Cross is assisting those displaced.
An attempt was made to rescue the infant within 20 minutes of arrival, but firefighters were unable to advance inside, Brown said.
The infant was under a year old, according to fire spokesman Kevin Brown.
Because of the fatality, the fire department got a warrant to preserve what is procedurally considered a crime scene, and the Vallejo police and fire departments are investigating the blaze, Brown said.
The cause of the fire is under investigation at this time.
The fire near Interstate Highway 80 and south of Six Flags Discovery Kingdom was reported around 11:35 p.m. It destroyed the two second-story apartments, but the first-floor apartments that sustained smoke and some fire damage will be habitable, Brown said.
