SAN FRANCISCO (KRON) — San Francisco Giants catcher Buster Posey met with UCSF Benioff Children’s Hospital patients on Tuesday in honor of Pediatric Cancer Awareness Month.

Posey, who is a dad to 5-year-old twins, talked to young patients, posed for pictures, and signed autographs. He then made private bedside visits.

“The visit marks a Bay Area-wide effort initiated by UCSF Benioff Children’s Hospitals in San Francisco and Oakland to raise awareness for pediatric cancer, the number one disease-related cause of death in children past infancy in the United States,” hospital spokeswoman Jennifer O’ Brien said in a press release.

The Giants will donate tickets to the Sept. 17 game against the St. Louis Cardinals to pediatric cancer survivors. The Oakland Athletics will donate some ticket sales to the children’s hospital in Oakland.

ESPN broadcaster Dick Vitale also attended the event.

About 15,780 children and adolescents under 19 were diagnosed with pediatric cancer in 2014, according to the National Cancer Institute.
