SAN JOSE (KRON) — A gas leak in San Jose has finally been capped after a shelter in place for residents and businesses nearby and over 12 hours of repairs.

The gas leak was reported on Thursday afternoon at 1:51 p.m.

San Jose Fire Department and PG&E are responded to an active natural gas leak on Alum Rock Avenue between Muirfield Drive and Foss Avenue near Interstate Highway 680.

Off-ramps from I-680 to Alum Rock may be impacted, according to San Jose Fire Department Captain, Christopher Salcido.

There was a 300-foot evacuation perimeter but there are no residences in that area.

Other residences and businesses in the area were advised to shelter in place. Two senior living facilities are among those buildings included in the affected area.

Around 12:30 p.m. PG&E crews were doing routine maintenance and damage a small, low-pressure gas line.

Crews had to dig a 6-foot hole by hand to access the line and shore the sides of it to prevent it from collapsing. Crews then had to do welding work on the steel pipe, which took several hours, said PG&G spokesperson J.D. Guidi.

Crews capped the leak early Friday morning at 3:19 a.m.

Service was not lost and no evacuations were necessary. There are no reported injuries.

Repair work is still continuing on Friday.
