OAKLAND (KRON) — Friends and family gathered at an Oakland funeral home on Wednesday to honor the memory of a young teen girl who was fatally shot last week.
They said this is the second time in the past five years they have lost a loved one in a tragedy like this, and they are still seeking closure.
The family of Regginae Jefferies said they are sick and tired of the violence in the streets of Oakland.
First, the teen’s grandfather was shot while walking a few years back. Now, the young girl fell victim to the same fate.
Sixteen-year-old Regginae Jeffereries had hopes to go college, and her aunt says the teen was well on her way to graduating from Deer Valley High School in Antioch.
“She could have been the next president, but we’ll never know,” aunt Eileen Wilson said.
Those dreams were cut short last week when Regginae was walking from a vigil in Oakland for two of her friends.
She and three others were shot at off Franklin and 14th streets.
Her aunt said Regginae didn’t know the people who shot at her and that her niece was just at the wrong place at the wrong time.
“It was a senseless, senseless act of violence on a beautiful, beautiful angel,” Wilson said. “All I would like to see is justice.”
The same justice their family is still waiting for after Regginae’s grandfather Lemuel Wilson was also fatally shot in Oakland back in 2012.
“But enough is enough, I’m speaking for everybody in Oakland that has been murdered,” Wilson said.
Regginae’s aunt said the community of Oakland is held hostage by criminals.
And she said that she would like to see the mayor focus on these violent crimes to ensure the city’s children can walk the streets safely.
